History of International Yog Day

For last 68 years, Janardanswami Yogabhyasi Mandal, Nagpur has been dedicated to cause of spread Yog, without charging any money for teaching Yog. Teaching Ashtanga Yog and cultivating teachers who teach Ashtanga Yog while ensuring that these teachers too do not charge any money for teaching Yog and are inspired to continue with this selfless work of teaching Ashtanga Yog throughout their lifetime, as envisioned by our Guru is part of what we do at Janardanswami Yogabhyasi Mandal, Nagpur.

Swamiji has very well articulated the significant role of Yog, propagation of Yog as well as Yog teachers in his book Yogswaroop. After Swamiji took samadhi in 1978, the vision & direction he elaborated in Yogswaroop is guiding us all, as if all this work has been carried out, without any hindrances, under his personal leadership. As a result of such dedication to the cause of Yog, there are over 150 Yog centres, run by the teachers trained here & they teach Ashtanga Yog, free of cost without missing a single day of the year.

Teaching Yogasan collectively and to perform them in a group is a speciality of our Yogabhyasi Mandal. Training individuals to evolve through the steps of Yama, Niyama, Asan, Pranayam, Pratyahar, Dharna, Dhyaan and Shuddhikriya to higher physical, spiritual & consciousness levels to try and attain Kaivailya is what constitutes our Yogabhyasi Mandal’s work. Knowing full well the need for introduction & propagation of Yog in society, the founder of our Yogabhyasi Mandal, Parampujya Parivrajakacharya Yogmurti Shri Janardanswami Maharaj had in 1972-73 donated Rs. 1000/- to Nagpur Municipal Corporation for organising a Yog Din (Yog Day) every year.

Today after 48 years of having sown the seed of thought by Swamiji, as if Hon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has through his vision & care transformed that seed of Yog din sown by Swamiji it into a Banyan tree in the form of International Yog Day, a moment of euphoria for us, inexpressible in words.

Hence Yogabhyasi Mandal had celebrated this International Yog Day on 21st june 2019 on a grand scale at Yashwant Stadium, Dhantoli, Nagpur with a uniquely designed collective Yogasan sequence, conducting exhaustive training session for this sequence across Nagpur’s institutions, parks, schools, etc. and finally undertaking a Mega event with over 25,000 people at Yashwant Stadium performing synchronised sequence of various Yogasana.

This year too we are conducting training and collecting pledges from health-conscious Nagpurians and the preparation for the 8th International Yog Day are on full swing. We request you to submit the pledge to attend by clicking on the button below. Come let’s participate in unprecedented numbers and make it the largest ever event of Yog in the history of Nagpur.
